Session Summary
Council Track:
Our Youth, Our Promise
Session Title:
How Media Effects our Youth
Session Convener:
Daryn Curtis
General concerns of the council:
- Violence in media, and expecially video games. "We need to know the truth, but is it reflective of our culture?"
- Kids don't distinguish between what is violent and "what is cool"
- Could we have video games where people "save" instead of kill others?
- Violence is made glamorous.
- Girls are impacted by media regarding their "APPEARANCE"
- Boys are impacted by media regarding VIOLENCE.
- Our teens seek Trust and to be trusted.
- Parenting is often the source of problems.
- How to NOT be addicted to TV? Other things become interesting.
- HOW MUCH IMPACT THE MEDIA HAS! - Kids addicted to TV
Best practices or lessons learned from our previous experiences on this topic and our conversation here:
Teens/children seek GENUINE CARING.
What are healthy images of heros:
respect, caring, challenge, listen, trying to connect, equality, encouraging
Creative thinking and new ideas that have emerged:
- Children need a "TIME OF INNOCENCE" at least 4-5 years - no violence.
- Children/teens want to be challenged and encouraged.
- Start teaching current events at a younger age.
- They want Genuine caring from adults.
- Where are the elders for guidance?
- Could we have a "Violence Free Santa Fe?"
- No violent video games in public - (movie theaters, malls etc.)

| The pursuit of peace and progress cannot end in a few years in either victory or defeat. The pursuit of peace and progress, with its trials and errors, its successes and setbacks, can never be relaxed and never abandoned. -- Dag Hammarskjold |
